Founded by Madame Sarah Derby and in continuous operation since 1791, Derby Academy is the oldest independent, coeducational day school in New England. The school, situated on a 27-acre campus, moved from its original site in 1965, when the trustees deeded the old academy building to the Hingham Historical Society. The nondenominational program emphasizes a well-balanced education with challenging academics, enriching arts, physical education and competitive team sports. In addition to traditional courses, the curriculum includes studio art, pottery, woodworking, music, sewing, dramatics and computer instruction. Derby's three divisions—lower school (grades pre-K-3), middle school (grades 4-6) and upper school (grades 7 and 8)—provide age-appropriate settings for its student body. Summer Arts at Derby utilizes the campus in July and August, enrolling students interested in exploring fine arts and recreational offerings taught by area professionals. Most of the school's graduates continue their secondary education at independent schools, both boarding and day, in New England.
