Dalton School

108 E 89th St, New York, NY 10128

Founded by Helen Parkhurst, the school applies the theories of her widely known Dalton Plan. The plan utilizes "the House, the Assignment and the Laboratory" to assist each student in accepting increasing responsibility for his or her education. The present building opened in the autumn of 1929. Eleanor Roosevelt, who admired Miss Parkhurst's work, played an important role in expanding the school by promoting a merger between the Todhunter School and Dalton in 1939. Today, Miss Parkhurst's basic techniques have been broadened and modernized from the First Program (grades K-3) through high school. The East 89th Street facility houses the middle and upper grades, while the First Program occupies a separate building on East 91st Street. Sports and physical education facilities are located on East 87th Street. Dalton's progressive educational model is enhanced by the introduction of computer technology in kindergarten, an interdisciplinary archaeological unit in grade 3 and foreign languages from grade 5. Approximately 140 full-time and semester courses constitute the high school curriculum. Students choose their own classes and plan laboratory time with the help of an advisor. Dalton issues laptops to boys and girls in grades 6-8 for school and home use, and computer science is a graduation requirement. During the high school years, boys and girls complete four community service projects. Seniors are able to pursue independent projects during second semester, and qualified pupils may enroll in interschool courses at seven other New York City independent schools. Dalton also offers internships and study projects in hospitals and business firms and funds a lectureship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History.
