39 School St, PO Box 8000, Ashburnham, MA 01430
Founded by a benefaction from Thomas Parkman Cushing, a native of Ashburnham, and enriched by several bequests, this academy owes its early growth chiefly to Dr. Hervey S. Cowell, beloved by his students and in office for nearly 40 years. Over the years, the school has seen an improvement of facilities and physical plant, with steady increases in enrollment and faculty, as well as heightened academic standards. Cushing's college preparatory program features Advanced Placement courses, well-developed fine arts and computer curricula, opportunities for independent study, language development courses, ESL classes and trimester-length seminars. All students must purchase laptop computers, and a wireless Internet network covers all academic buildings. An important facet of the academic program, The Cushing Institute for 21st Century Leadership, brings current issues into the classroom, facilitates global travel experiences and hosts various guest speakers. The institute also provides leadership and entrepreneurial opportunities on campus and coordinates both internships and the Cushing Scholars, an enrichment program for a chosen group of high-potential students. In 2009, the academy changed its library into a primarily digital learning center that houses a collection of electronic readers and online data sources. Many faculty members reside on campus, and each pupil has a faculty advisor. The school draws its enrollment from many states and foreign countries.
