Convent of the Sacred Heart

1 E 91st St, New York, NY 10128

The oldest private girls' school in Manhattan, Sacred Heart offers a solid college preparatory program with an emphasis on small-class instruction, a diversity of backgrounds among faculty and students, and community service in the urban environment. Features of the curriculum include independent study, Advanced Placement courses, and a broad selection of electives that includes creative writing, studio art, pottery, photography, computer graphics and the theater arts. Girls in grades 8-12 satisfy an annual community service requirement. Opportunities for exchange study are available within the worldwide Network of Sacred Heart Schools. Over the years, students have attended Sacred Heart schools in France, Spain and Belgium for a semester, as well as some of the schools in the US. Religion courses are required of all students. Located on Fifth Avenue opposite Central Park, the school's two buildings have been designated as city landmarks for their architectural styles. The principal structure is the former Otto Kahn residence, a copy of an Italian Renaissance palace; the adjoining rococo-style mansion formerly belonged to James Burden.
