Charles Merrill founded Commonwealth, which currently occupies two renovated Back Bay townhouses, with an eye toward taking advantage of its location in the heart of the city. The rigorous curriculum emphasizes effective writing; history, especially readings and research from primary sources; math; the sciences; the visual and performing arts; and close literary analysis of major works in both English and other languages. The school utilizes locations and resources across the city to support academic, artistic and athletic programming. Students complete 70 hours of required community service prior to the start of grade 11. Twice a year, the school community spends extended weekends at a lakeside camp in southern Maine, where pupils and teachers jointly plan meals and recreational activities. During the spring semester, boys and girls devote a week (or, in the case of seniors, a month) to an intensive project in an area of interest, such as politics, scientific research, the arts or community service. Approximately two dozen students use this time for exchange trips to France or Spain.
