Cleary School for the Deaf

Profoundly deaf children from Suffolk and Nassau counties receive a total communication approach to learning at Cleary. The curriculum includes traditional academic subjects, in addition to speech reading, auditory training, finger spelling and signs. Programming also includes instruction in art, photography, visual perception, cognitive training, vocational job training and visual communication. Each student undergoes an evaluation each year to determine if he or she is ready for mainstreaming into a traditional school. An infant program provides educational services for parents and their children (birth to age 3). The secondary program operates at East Islip High School in Islip Terrace. The State of New York pays all tuition, fees and transportation costs. The school accepts the following conditions: Deafness, Deaf-blindness, Hearing Impairments.
