City and Country School

146 W 13th St, New York, NY 10011

Founded by Caroline Pratt, City and Country conducts a program designed to help students explore firsthand experiences, play and responsible work, and to develop social and academic skills in an atmosphere of trust. The lower school program begins at age 2. For children ages 8-13, a strong history and social studies curriculum is built around a job program in which each class runs a school service (supplies, mail service, print shop and so on). The program includes opportunities for individualized work and research at each age, as well as a natural daily impetus for perfecting reading, writing, mathematical and creative skills. Art, woodworking, science, music, computer and rhythms are integral to the program. The library, specially developed over the years as a source for the social studies program, is notable for its collection of primary source material.
