Charles River School
6 Old Meadow Rd, PO Box 339, Dover, MA 02030
Founded by area parents on the banks of the Charles River in Needham, CRS moved to Dover in 1917. The school offers a varied, rigorous elementary program to children from roughly 30 towns in suburban Boston. Parents and faculty play an active role in the direction of the school. The interdisciplinary, thematic curriculum emphasizes critical-thinking, reading, writing and math skills, as well as science, social studies, computer, and health and wellness. The arts are integral to the program. Instructional groups are limited to 10 or 11 pupils per teacher. In all grades, consideration is given to each student's developmental level and learning style. The school offers three years of both French and Spanish, as well as a Spanish introductory program in grades pre-K-1. Global awareness and community service are important aspects of school life: Boys and girls in grades 7 and 8 perform 10 compulsory hours of service at school and five hours in the wider community.
