Cathedral School for Boys
1275 Sacramento St, San Francisco, CA 94108
Cathedral provides a traditional pre-preparatory program. The literature-based language arts program features a reading specialist and a developmental approach to reading (with small reading groups across grade levels), while the math curriculum progresses from a manipulative approach to a more abstract one that emphasizes computational and thinking skills. Spanish and Mandarin courses begin in grade 5, and all boys study Latin in grades 7 and 8. CSB's curriculum also includes an English language structures class for fifth and sixth graders. A full science lab and a technology lab further enrich Cathedral's program. Music and art programs are integral to school life. Some boys enter the Grace Cathedral choir in grade 4, although most take part in the regular music program, which includes a handbell choir and voice training. Band, string ensemble and instrumental music lessons are also available. A well-developed art program, taught in both classroom and studio settings, is integrated at all grade levels. Other notable aspects of the program are electives in grades 3-8, no-cut athletic teams, regular field trips, weeklong environmental excursions, and international travel during intersession and winter break. In addition, community service is part of the curriculum at all grade levels. An extended-day program serving children in grades K-6 operates before and after school.
