Carolina Friends School

4809 Friends School Rd, Durham, NC 27705

Founded by local Quakers and still affiliated with the Society of Friends, this nonsectarian school encourages students to progress at their own rates in a challenging and cooperative environment. The wooded, 126-acre main campus is accessible to Hillsborough, Durham and Chapel Hill. CFS maintains three early schools for children ages 3-6: one on the main campus, a second in Durham near Duke University and a third in Chapel Hill near the University of North Carolina. The early curriculum emphasizes the development of basic skills through an integrated program involving thematic studies, field trips and cooperative learning in small, mixed-age groups. In addition to required course work, middle and upper school pupils engage in electives in language arts, math, science, social studies, the visual and dramatic arts, music, dance, woodworking, physical education and community service. Mini-sessions between terms and at year's end encourage community involvement, experiential learning and self-reliance.
