Cape Henry Collegiate School

Formerly the Everett School, Cape Henry Collegiate is Virginia Beach's oldest independent school. Students are encouraged to balance academics, athletics, the arts and community involvement. Pupils enroll from Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Chesapeake, as well as several foreign countries. The curriculum is college preparatory, emphasizing English, math, foreign languages, social studies, science and global affairs. The developmental lower school program offers an extended-day program for children in grades pre-K-5. The middle school (grades 6-8) provides an interdisciplinary curriculum and an enrichment program that includes electives in literary magazine, newspaper, music, drama and art. Emphasis upon computer literacy in core subjects begins in the lower school and continues through the upper school. The upper school curriculum emphasizes writing, critical-thinking and research skills. Advanced Placement and honors courses in all disciplines, as well as a variety of activities and public speaking requirements, are featured. Boys and girls in grades 6-8 perform six hours of compulsory community service per year, while those in grades 9-12 accumulate at least 10 hours annually.
