Long holding a leadership position among Catholic boarding schools and appealing to families not only in New England but throughout the world, Canterbury is conducted by Catholic laity. The work accomplished by the first headmaster, Dr. Nelson Hume, was recognized by Pope Pius XI, who appointed him to the Order of the Knights of St. Gregory in 1938. Canterbury offers a college preparatory curriculum, with graduates attending both Catholic and nonsectarian colleges around the country. A wide range of elective courses, with such offerings as ethics, political philosophy, oceanography, studio art and literature of women over the years, supplements required academics.
