Canadian International School of Hong Kong

36 Nam Long Shan Rd, Aberdeen, Hong Kong

Founded to address a perceived shortage of Hong Kong international schools employing a North American curricular model, CDNIS offers a rigorous academic program that includes a strong technology component and an emphasis on the performing arts. The school now offers all three International Baccalaureate programs, beginning with the Primary Years Program. Starting in the early years (pre-reception and reception), children take specialist-taught Mandarin, library skills and music classes. Boys and girls develop a foundation in the basic skills in language arts, math, Mandarin, the social sciences, art, science, music and physical education through grade 4, then begin the study of French in grade 5. The transitional middle school takes students from the self-contained classroom approach of the junior school to the curriculum-based, departmental focus of the high school. A Chinese Studies program in the middle school and high school reinforces Mandarin instruction. The high school division, which leads to either the IB Diploma or the Ontario (Canada) Secondary School Diploma, includes Advanced Placement course work and incorporates enriching field trips that provide opportunities for off-site learning. In grades 9 and 10, pupils enrolled in the Ontario program choose from two course levels; in grades 11 and 12, the selection expands to four tracks.
