Buxton School Buxton School

Buxton School is a coed college-preparatory boarding and day school for students who are looking for stimulating, participatory academics; a committed arts program; and a community experience that is supportive and intentional. For over 80 years, Buxton has been educating students in the progressive tradition–we believe that all people learn best by doing, and that experience is the most powerful teacher of all. Our goal is to find the appropriate balance between a challenging academic curriculum and a community life that is rich and fulfilling. Discussion-based classes are the norm; ESL instruction and academic support are available. Qualified students can also take classes at nearby Williams College.

Central to the school experience is the value of students contributing their ideas, energy, and labor to the care and maintenance at the school; the commitment we make to traveling within and outside our country to better understand how communities and governments work; and the importance of artistic exploration and expression. Buxton is also committed to diversity of every kind, as it serves to enrich students’ experiences at school as well as in the world beyond.

In addition to a varied curriculum that readies students for the rigors of college, Buxton offers extensive arts courses and activities that include studio art, music (composition, theory, and performance), theater, ceramics, photography, video production, creative writing, and drum and dance–Afro-Caribbean and Balinese.

Our campus–with new art and music studios and a renovated classroom/science complex–provides students with the best of both worlds: the charm and history of traditional buildings with the opportunities offered by state-of-the-art facilities. Nearby are the exceptional resources of Williams College, the Clark Art Institute, and MASS MoCA.
