Brooks was founded by Rev. Endicott Peabody, founder and onetime headmaster of Groton School. Named in honor of Phillips Brooks, former bishop of Massachusetts and native of North Andover, the school was given its land and original buildings by the Russell family. Girls were first admitted in 1979. Students follow a flexible liberal arts curriculum and readily enter leading colleges. The school offers Advanced Placement courses in the major disciplines. Each student may choose his or her own faculty advisor; faculty and students share in many aspects of school governance and committee work. The Students on the Forefront of Science program places talented fifth form students in summer research internships at universities and laboratories. Brooks conducts exchange programs with schools in Kenya, Scotland, South Africa and Hungary.
