Brooklyn Friends School

375 Pearl St, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Founded by the Brooklyn Meeting of the Society of Friends, BFS continues to adhere to Friends' traditions and ideals. In keeping with Quaker custom, the school conducts weekly meetings to provide time for silence and reflection. After more than 100 years at 112 Schermerhorn St., the school moved in 1973 to its current location in downtown Brooklyn. The upper school building is two blocks away on Willoughby Street. The school as a whole is divided into four sections: preschool (ages 3 and 4), lower (grades K-4), middle (grades 5-8) and upper (grades 9-12). The college preparatory upper school program features a faculty advisory system, electives, independent study options and travel abroad. In addition, juniors and seniors may enroll in the rigorous two-year IB Diploma Program. Brooklyn Friends issues laptop computers to students in grades 5, 6, 11 and 12. Community service is built into the curriculum, and older students also satisfy the following service requirements: 50 cumulative hours in grades 9 and 10, and another 150 total hours in grades 11 and 12. An arts-based summer program and outdoor education are among BFS' other offerings.
