Founded to meet the needs of British citizens living in Greater Washington, BSW now enrolls students from America and several dozen other countries. French language instruction begins at age 3 with short lessons and songs. The program for students ages 5-16 follows the British National Curriculum and the International Primary Curriculum. Latin and Spanish commence in grade 3, and drama is offered as an extracurricular activity. Classes leading to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education begin at age 14, and 16-year-olds pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The school occupies quarters near Georgetown University.
