Brearley School

610 E 83rd St, New York, NY 10028

Established by Samuel Brearley to provide a more substantial college preparatory program than most girls' schools of the time offered, Brearley has continuously maintained scholastic standards in the forefront among preparatory schools. With a substantial scholarship program, the school seeks racial, religious and economic diversity in its student body. Since 1929 in a building overlooking the East River, the school offers a curriculum integrating many of the academic subjects and affording strong work in music and the arts. Mandarin language is first introduced in grade 1, and an integrated language program in the middle school (grades 5-8) adds French, Latin and Spanish options. Although Brearley offers no honors or Advanced Placement courses, the school's standard curriculum prepares girls for AP exams in all major disciplines. Classrooms, which are structured around seminar circles of desks or tables, typically feature electronic whiteboards, laptop computers and other technology. Qualified sophomores, juniors and seniors may enroll in advanced science classes at Columbia University on Saturday mornings. Other off-campus learning opportunities in New York City include Saturday science seminars at Barnard College and US history courses at the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Brearley conducts annual student exchanges with the Godolphin and Latymer School or the Francis Holland School in London, England, in grade 9 and, in grades 10-12, independent schools in Tokyo, Japan; Melbourne, Australia; and Kansas City, MO. Scholarships are available for summer travel and study abroad. The school participates in a coordinated interscholastic academic and afternoon program with seven other New York City schools. Club sports commence in grade 5, while interscholastic competition begins in grade 7. Integrated community service projects progress from group endeavors to individual projects in grades 9-11.
