Beijing BISS International School

17 Area 4, An Zhen Xi Li, Chaoyang District, Beijing, 100029 China

Employing faculty members from Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe and North America, BISS conducts a full kindergarten through high school program for the area’s expatriate community. The transdisciplinary International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program serves as the basis for the curriculum in grades K-6. During these years, specialist teachers conduct courses in Chinese studies, music, English for Speakers of Other Languages, and physical education, all of which are integral to the program. The middle school (grades 7 and 8) at BISS, which follows the IB Middle Years Program, serves as a transition between the lower grades and the high school years. Particular emphasis falls on the development of oral and practical skills, investigation, problem solving, skill application and knowledge acquisition, and individual and cooperative work skills. College preparation becomes increasingly important in grades 9 and 10. During these years, pupils study languages, math, the sciences, humanities, social studies and the creative arts. Two distinct programs operate in grades 11 and 12: The IB Diploma Program, which features course work at two levels, and the Alternative Academic Program, into which students for whom the IB curriculum is not appropriate are assigned by BISS. A learning center assists pupils with specific learning needs, those participating in enrichment programs and those enrolled in gifted classes.
