Beacon is an alternative, therapeutic school for students who have displayed academic promise in previous years but who have undergone events in their lives that have rendered traditional academic programs inadequate. Boys and girls participate in compulsory individual and group therapy, and crisis management support is available at all times. Pupils typically take part in creative pursuits, among them printmaking, drama, school publications, and music compositions and performances. Students accumulate 20 hours of compulsory service—10 of which must take place at the school—prior to graduation. The school accepts the following conditions: ADHD, Anxiety Disorders, Asperger's Syndrome, Bulimia, Discalculia, Dysgraphia, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Emotional Disturbances, Mood Disorder, Nonverbal Learning Differences, Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, School Phobia.
