Arthur Morgan School
60 AMS Cir, Burnsville, NC 28714
Elizabeth Morgan founded this school in accordance with the principles of Montessori, Pestalozzi, Grundtvig, Gandhi and Arthur Morgan, as well as her own Quaker values. The program continues to address the needs and interests of early adolescents. The school occupies a 100-acre campus in the Black Mountains. The program integrates academic and practical skills, relating them to community life. Students participate in a daily work program and an outdoor hiking program. Academics feature small classes held four times each week, and electives address an array of interests. Community service plays an important role in the educational experience, with multiple opportunities provided during the year. In addition, the school divides itself into three distinct field trip groups in the early spring; each field trip has a service orientation and adheres to an educational theme that has been selected by students and staff.
