Admiral Farragut Academy

501 Park St N, St Petersburg, FL 33710

Admiral Farragut Academy was founded as a boys' school at Pine Beach, NJ, under the leadership of Adm. S. S. Robison, USN (Ret), a former superintendent of the US Naval Academy, and Brig. Gen. Cyrus S. Radford, USMC (Ret). In 1945, when the school reached maximum enrollment, the Florida campus was established. (The New Jersey campus closed in 1994.) AFA became coeducational in January of 1990. The lower division (grades pre-K-5), which began accepting students in 1999, provides a nonmilitary program. This naval preparatory school offers college preparatory work on a 35-acre campus on the state's Gulf Coast that permits outdoor activities throughout the school year. The highly structured academic program stresses math and science, while strong English and history departments emphasize reading and writing skills. Individual college advisement and SAT preparation, as well as a full English for Speakers of Other Languages program, give all possible assurance of each student's success. All students in grades 9-12 fulfill an 80-hour community service requirement prior to graduation. High schoolers also enroll in the Naval JROTC program, which includes drill team, color guard, rifle team and summer cruises aboard naval vessels. In addition, boys and girls must earn a sailing certification prior to graduation.
