Academy of the Sacred Heart

1250 Kensington Rd, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304

The school moved to its present, 44-acre campus in 1958, over a century after the founding date. In 2006, the academy effected a merger with Kensington Academy, a coeducational elementary school that began on the ASH campus in 1969. The curriculum, which is highly individualized in the coeducational early grades (from an infant and toddler program through grade 4), emphasizes college preparation throughout. Boys and girls learn in single-gender settings during the middle school years (grades 5-8). Girls in the upper school (grades 9-12) choose from independent study and Advanced Placement options in a variety of subjects. Upper school requirements include two hours of community service each week (beginning in grade 10) and 20 hours of online course work each year. All upper schoolers must purchase tablet computers for in-class use. Middle schoolers spend several days to a week off campus while engaged in enrichment programs that range from day trips into Detroit to participation in outdoor camps. High school girls take part in the compulsory Project Term, which enables them to study a focused unit of study through community service experiences, personal challenges or career exploration in a local, national or international setting. As part of an international network of schools, Sacred Heart provides students with the opportunity to participate in exchanges abroad or within the United States.
